Growing Tips - How to take care of Carnivorous Plants
Altough most specimens have special needs, here are some generalities for insectivorous plants.
Water:
- Soil needs to be moist at all times: You can do this by leaving a saucer under the pot and filling it with water when it is empty.
- Always use quality water without minerals. Rainwater is the best for your plants. Never use tap water since it contains too many minerals and chlorine could kill your plant.
Fertilizer:
- Never use fertilizer for your carnivorous plants. The only fertilizer needed is the insects they catch.
Soil:
- You can use a mixture of peat moss, perlite and silica sand for potting, while ensuring good drainage.
Light:
- Generally light from the southwest is ideal. You can also use extra lights. Some prefers direct sun light.
Dormancy:
- Some temperate plants need dormancy (e.g. some Sarracenia and Drosera), i.e., a period of hibernation.
